In 1969, Steve McQueen took a break from training for the Baja 1000 off-road race, cruising in his Jeep CJ5 special V8. McQueen, a renowned motorcycle and car enthusiast, was an experienced off-road racer who often raced in Baja using a unique vehicle called 'the Baja Boot.' This Super Jeep was built by Vic Hickey from Con-Ferr Incorporated in Burbank, California, and was featured in the Sept. '69 issue of Rod & Custom. While it was referred to as a Universal Jeep, not a CJ5, this chrome roll bar-equipped Jeep was cutting-edge for a street-driven 4x4 and likely used as a desert race prerunner. It was even a finalist for the '69 Street Rod of the Year award.
