Episode one of Build Masters, brought to you by Gtechniq, kicks off with something special — a Toyota Starlet KP61 that perfectly blends family heritage, race-inspired styling, and show car finesse. This isn’t just a tidy classic — it’s a full-on statement build, years in the making.

Ash’s obsession with the Starlet began long before this project. His dad raced one in Hot Rods back in the ‘80s, and the car has been a dream ever since. After years of hunting, Ash finally sourced a left-hand-drive example in Belgium, which kicked off a 3-year transformation.

Under the bonnet sits a 2.0-litre Volkswagen ABF engine from a Mk3 Golf GTI — turned 90 degrees for RWD duties, just like the Hot Rods Ash’s dad raced. Making a healthy 220bhp, this Starlet is no slouch, especially considering how little it weighs.

It’s packed with race-ready gear: a dry sump setup, a 5-speed Quaife ‘box, a twin-plate clutch, English axle out back, and a full fire suppression system. SHP Engineering spent 3 years on fabrication and setup, ensuring it’s not just fast — it’s functional.

The body takes inspiration from his dad’s original Arena Essex racer. A TRD N2-style kit from Portugal sets the tone, complete with wide arches, a rear wing, and purposeful stance. It’s got retro motorsport vibes in spades — from the Avon tyres on 13-inch wheels to the motorsport-spec suspension with Nitron adjustable dampers.

Inside, it’s all business. Custom fabricated tunnel, Cobra bucket seats, minimalist dash, and neatly hidden electrics. Ash even tracked down a rare RHD dashboard from Malaysia, only to end up molding his own.

Despite the show-quality finish, Ash built this car to be driven. From wrapped undersides for durability to easy-to-touch-up paint, it’s designed to be used on both track and street. “I’ve built it to use,” he says — and that’s what makes it truly special.
