One of the UK’s busiest roads faces major disruption within hours with a series of overnight closures in place. According to National Highways, the popular A1 road will be affected by nine closures this evening - including five on busy sections of motorway.

Seven of the closures will begin from 8pm this evening, with routes remaining closed until 6am tomorrow morning. This should be after most of the rush hour traffic has passed but could still be a blow to the thousands of vehicles who use the road every day. Most of the closures are down to construction improvement and upgrades on key stretches of road.

According to National Highways, the A1 Southbound will be closed between Wansford and Junction 17 carriageway from 8pm until 6am tomorrow.

The A1 Northbound will be shut in three areas over the same time in a potential blow to commuters.

The three sections of road affected include between Newark to Apleyhead, the Little Ponton sliproad and the Junction 66 exit slip road.

The A1 (M) Southbound will be affected between Junction 15 and Junction 14 between 8pm and 6am for what National Highways has called "structural maintenance".

Meanwhile, the A1(M) Northbound will be shut between Junction 42 and Junction 43 at the same time for "network maintenance works”.

Again the A1(M) Northbound will be closed between Junction 3 and Junction 4 with disruption for tunnel works set to take place from 10pm tonight until 5:30am tomorrow morning.

The A1(M) Southbound is also affected by the closures with a stretch of road between Junction 6 and Junction 4 shut between 10pm and 5.30am due to resurfacing.

However, disruption is set to continue for much of this week with many of these A1 road closures in place until at least Thursday.

The A1 is the UK’s longest road with around 40,000 vehicles using it every single day.

The road is a vital link, connecting London to Edinburgh while passing through several cities such as Peterborough, York, Darlington and Durham.

It’s not the only disruption set to hit road users with National Highways also conforming work will continue on upgrading the busy Black Cat Roundabout in St Neots.

Officials stressed that they would “make changes to the road layout” as part of a new junction upgrade at Black Cat roundabout over summer 2025.
