A Chinese electric car brand has launched a direct rival to the iconic  Land Rover Defender, with the new model over £40,000 cheaper. The brand new iCar03, built by major Chinese car brand Chery, is on sale for around £14,535 (129,800 Yuan).

In comparison, a new UK Land Rover Defender will set road users back by an eye-watering £58,310. It means the new Chinese model would offer an impressive saving of £43,775 in a potential coup for customers. Despite this, there are currently no plans to sell the model in Europe meaning motorists cannot enjoy the major discount just yet.

Although, plans for expansion could be just around the corner with the Chinese model already sold in many Asian markets such as Thailand and Indonesia.

The iCar03 could also enter production in Australia soon, offering major discounts in a massive boost to consumers.

Chery launched the iCar03 back in February 2024 with the Chinese brand claiming the vehicle is aimed at a younger audience.

However, the boxy outline looks almost a carbon copy of the Land Rover Defender and is sure to raise the eyebrows of off-roader fans looking for something on a budget.

The iCar03 has a length of 4,406mm, a width of 1,910mm and a height of 1,715mm alongside a wheelbase of 2,715mm.

The single-motor rear-wheel-drive model has a maximum power output of 135kW. However, the more powerful dual-motor four-wheel drive model can push out 205kW and has a much higher torque.

This model can reach 0 to 60mph in just 6.5 seconds and has a top speed of 93mph (150kph). The highest spec iCar03 will also come with a maximum range of around 311 miles (501km) making it ideal for days out or weekends away.

Inside, the iCar03 has a stylish interior with comfortable seating and a classy design which looks higher value than the price tag would let you suggest.

The model is packed with technology including an infotainment touchscreen device located in the centre of the console.

Chery’s iCar models could become a major player in the electric car scene with plans to launch sedan models and other SUVs.

The company previously showed off its iCar GT concept in Shanghai, a more sportier model which could take on legacy brands such as Tesla.
